How Counterpoint Legal Saves 45 Minutes a Day With LegalMate

Morgan Aras of Counterpoint Legal on what changed when calls became automatic transcripts, notes and Clio time entries: 45 minutes saved daily and fewer missed billables.

Morgan Ross runs Counterpoint Legal, a firm with four offices across California and Guam. It handles privacy litigation, class actions, family law and personal injury.

That’s a lot of phone calls. And until recently, every one of them ended the same way: hang up, start typing, and hope you caught everything.

“You’re trying to pay attention. You’re trying to get all the salient notes. And you’re always going to miss a little something.”

In the video above, Ali walks through a live demo of LegalMate, then sits down with Morgan to talk about what actually changed at his firm. Here are the highlights.

Before: notes, memory and a few angry messages from his paralegals

Morgan is the first to admit he’s not a great note-taker. Back-to-back calls, a fire to put out, and by the end of the day the notes either got rushed or didn’t happen at all.

“Then I wake up to a nastygram from one of my paralegals that says, ‘Hey, I noticed you talked to this person and there weren’t any notes.’”

After: hang up, move on

Now every call is transcribed and summarized, with tasks pulled out and a time entry created in Clio automatically. Morgan calls it “the Ronco rotisserie of legal notes. Set it and forget it.”

What that looks like day to day:

  • About 45 minutes saved a day. “Think of how long I have to sit there and write notes about a complicated half-hour consult.”

  • Higher billing. “We’re not missing that two-minute phone call. It’s still a 0.1.”

  • Better consults. Morgan reads the intake transcript before every consult. Clients notice: “Wow, you really know my case.”

  • A paper trail when it counts. When a client says nobody called them back, Morgan doesn’t just pull up his call log. He shows them the transcript.

His paralegals use it to audit him

This was our favorite part. Morgan’s team goes into LegalMate, reads what he promised a client, and comes back with: here are the next four things you said you’d do. When are they getting done?

They also use it to train new staff by reviewing how they’re talking to callers and what they’re promising.

His advice for firm owners

“Start. AI is scary. It is the wild west. Start small, with something you know is confidential, and see what it can do for you.”

The full conversation is worth a watch. It includes Morgan’s story about a big-firm partner on the other side of an AI-recording case who thought LegalMate’s recording notice was a trick.
